Head of School
Kevin Baker has over 30 years of experience in education. Kevin has worked at Hong Kong International School and Seoul Foreign School and has been Head of School at several independent schools in the United States prior to joining BIFS. Kevin has a Bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education from Concordia University Nebraska, a Master’s degree in Education Administration from Washington State University, and is completing his Doctorate degree in Education. In his free time Kevin enjoys his family, presenting, reading, grilling, golfing, and supporting the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Kevin began working at Busan International Foreign School in the summer of 2014.
Head of Secondary and Individuals and Societies Teacher
Alistair has 30 years of teaching experience in both boarding and day schools. He has worked in the classroom, been Head of Department on several occasions, Head of Boarding and in administration, having been Head of Campus at Geelong Grammar School and Head of Middle and High School at BIFS during his career. During his time in education he has taught at 7 different schools. He has a Bachelors degree in Geography and History, an Associate Degree in Social Science – Boarding Schools and a Diploma or Education. He enjoys exercising during his spare time. He has been at BIFS for a total of 7 years.
Head of Elementary and English as an Additional Language
Kevin Smith has over 30 years of experience in education. Kevin has worked at Mombasa International School,International School of Moshi, Tanzania and British school of Costa Rica internationally as well as in England for 4 years prior to joining BIFS. Kevin has a Bachelor’s degree in Art History, a Post Graduate Certificate of Education and a Masters degree in Teaching English to Speakers of other Languages. In his free time Kevin enjoys his family life, reading, music and visiting Art exhibitions. Kevin began working at Busan International Foreign School in the summer of 2001.
Third Grade Teacher
Lindy Bok has 25 plus years experience working in education and social services, both in Australia and Korea. She has worked in a wide variety of ELC settings and Elementary Schools, undertaking classroom and leadership positions. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Education and a Master’s Degree in Special Education, with a speciality in social, emotional and behavioural development of children. In her free time Lindy enjoys spending time with her family and friends, reading, eating good food and exploring Korea. Lindy previously worked at Busan International Foreign School for 3 years and then returned in the summer of 2015.
Fifth Grade Teacher
Monique Donahue was born in The Netherlands. As a child she moved overseas with her parents to the Caribbean. She experienced first hand what it means to be a Third Culture Kid. When she moved back to her home country she first went to study Anthropology. When she realized her chances of finding work with a degree in Anthropology were limited she switched to International Business . After completing her degree she worked in corporate roles for a number of years before going back to school. She received a Bachelor’s Degree in Primary Education and continued to earn a Master’s Degree in International Education from Bath University in the UK. She has been teaching for 15 years in international schools in Turkey, China, The Philippines and now Korea. Monique is a trained IB (International Baccalaureate) Workshop Leader and PYP School Visit Team member. She has been awarded two I.B. Teaching and Learning Awards for her research in the field of education. Monique is married with two children, who attend BIFS. She is passionate about getting involved in the communities she works in. In her free time she is involved with a women’s livelihood project in The Philippines that upcycles rice sacks into fashionable bags.
Math and Science Teacher
Marie has over 10 years of experience in primary and secondary education. She has taught a variety of grades at Paju English Village, Wangbuk elementary school in Seoul and Eversdal Primary school in Cape Town prior to joining the BIFS team. Marie has a Bachelor’s degree in Intermediate and Senior phase Education (Grades 4 to 9) from Stellenbosch University in South Africa. In her free time Marie cycles around Busan and Korea, take photos, eat Korean food and enjoys family gatherings and camping. She has been working at Busan International Foreign School since August 2012.
Elementary English as an Additional Language Teacher
Tina has had over 5 years experience teaching both elementary and high school students. She taught at a Deaf School in Ensenada, Mexico and has worked with both Deaf and hard of hearing students. She has worked with EAL students in 3 different states at many different grade levels. She obtained her B.A. in Elementary/Middle Education from Wisconsin Lutheran College and has a Masters degree in curriculum instruction and English as a second language from the University of Phoenix. During her free time she can often be found with her family exploring new places around Busan and beyond. This is her first year teaching at BIFS and third year in Busan.
Elementary School Teacher and Librarian
Megan Graff has nearly 20 years of experience in education. She has worked at schools in Canada, Singapore and Switzerland. She has also done long term volunteer work in Tanzania and Bolivia. Megan has a BA in General Humanities and a BEd in Elementary Education. She also has a Librarianship Specialist qualification from Queen’s University. In her free time, Megan enjoys reading, visiting friends and family all over the world, listening to podcasts, and hiking. Megan began working at Busan International Foreign School in August 2016.
Meng Lee has over 18 years of experience in education. Meng has worked at Arusha Nursery School, Mombasa International School and Busan International School prior to joining BIFS. Meng has a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Food Science, a Certificate in Early Childhood Teaching and a Certificate in Korean Language Instruction. Meng taught ELC students in Tanzania, Kenya and Korea and she is currently teaching Korean Language to ELC and Elementary students. In her free time Meng likes to go to music concert & gallery and enjoys travelling.
Early Learning Center Teacher
Carol Lesser has over 20 years of experience in early childhood and ESL education. She has taught in Taiwan and Canada and has also worked at international schools in Korea, Indonesia, Singapore and Mongolia. Carol earned a Diploma and a Bachelor of Education in Early Childhood Education from universities in Taiwan. Additionally, she earned a Montessori Graduate Diploma in Vancouver, Canada. Furthermore, she earned a Master of Education in Teaching Second Languages in Toowoomba, Australia. She also has certification in Reggio Emilia, PYP, ESL, and the University of Cambridge International Primary Program. In her free time, Carol enjoys dancing, cooking, organizing social events with her husband, Michael, and traveling. She has been at Busan International Foreign School since 2015.
First Grade Teacher
Caterina Martinez Yamagata has 7 years of experience in education. She has previously worked for a bilingual PYP school in Kobe, Japan, where she has also had leadership roles. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Primary School Education, specializing in Teaching English as a Foreign Language. Caterina enjoys spending time with family and friends, going for walks, hiking, and traveling around the world during her free time. She has arrived at Busan International Foreign School in 2017.
Sonita McErlean has 7 years of experience in education. She has previously worked at The KAUST School in Saudi Arabia after beginning her teaching career in New Zealand. She has a Bachelor of Education from University of Otago, New Zealand. She enjoys exploring with her husband and daughter, relaxing with friends, reading and eating good food. Sonita is excited to continue her journey with her first year as part of the team at Busan International Foreign School.

Deanna has 9 years of experience in education. She has previously worked in Sana’a, Yemen, for 18 months, teaching English as an Additional Language (EAL). She has a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Women’s Studies from the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, a TEFL English as a Second Language teaching certificate and a Master’s in Elementary Education from Walden University. She enjoys spending time with her children, running, hiking, climbing, dancing, photography, baking, sewing and exploring the many amazing sights Korea has to offer.
Elementary Music and PE Teacher
Desta Olds is starting her 5th year of teaching. She has taught music at two schools in the United States, and at Busan International Foreign School for the last year. Ms. Olds received her Bachelors of Music Education in General Music and Orchestral Music from Pacific Lutheran University. She has also completed two levels of the Orff Schulwerk music education method at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. In her free time Ms. Olds plays her cello, or ukulele, watches movies, and scrapbooks. Ms. Olds is excited to continue at BIFS for her second year!!
Cindy Park has over 15 years of experience in education. Cindy has worked at Bugok Middle school, Pusan Foreign Language High School and universities in Korea prior to joining Busan International Foreign School. Cindy has a Bachelor’s degree in Education from University of Sydney. In her free time, Cindy enjoys spending time with her family, reading, watching movies and travelling. Cindy began working at Busan International Foreign School in the summer of 2012.

André has over 16 years of experience in education and has worked at international schools in Indonesia, The Philippines, and Cambodia. He has a Bachelors degree in Fine Arts, Major in Industrial Design, certified in Cambridge International Examinations for Art and Design and a Google Educator. André is also a musician and enjoys spending time with his wife and daughter. He has been with Busan International Foreign School since 2010.

Michelle has over twenty years experience in education. She has worked at various independent schools in Australia as an administrator, special education teacher and classroom teacher. Michelle has a Diploma of Teaching, Graduate Diploma of Special Education and Master’s Degree in Special Education. In her free time Michelle enjoys walking, cooking, reading, travelling and spending time with her family. Michelle worked at BIFS for four years from 2008-2012 and returned to the school in 2014.
Fourth Grade Teacher
Kieran Shields has over 10 years of experience in primary education. He began his primary teaching career in the United Kingdom before moving overseas to work in international schools. He has held leadership roles, as well as classroom positions. In his previous employment, he took on the role of Deputy Head Teacher and later as Head of Elementary at a bilingual IB school in Japan. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Sports Studies from the University of Stirling and a Post Graduate Diploma in Elementary teaching from the University of Glasgow. In his spare time, he likes to watch sports and explore Korea. Kieran began working at BIFS in August 2017.

Kathy Son has over 20 years of experience in education. She has worked at BIFS since the winter of 1995. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Child Development in California State University of Fullerton and has done a Teacher Credential Program in Concordia University, Irvine. In her free time Kathy enjoys going shopping and watching movies with her family.
Fernando Alvarez has 30 years of experience in education. He has worked at the International School of Caracas in Venezuela, 2 public schools in Virginia and Georgia in the US, and the International School of Stuttgart in Germany. Fernando has a Bachelor’s degree in Languages and a minor in Psychology from Texas A&M University. Also, he has an international TEFL certificate, a certificate in translation (English-Spanish-English), and a Negotiation and Conflict Resolution credential from Simon Bolivar University in Caracas, Venezuela. Fernando also holds a K-12 Spanish teaching certificate from the state of Texas, and he is currently finishing his Master’s degree in Management and Strategic Operations. In his free time, Fernando likes to exercise, practice martial arts, read, go to the beach, go fishing, play tennis, and spend time with his wife and two sons. Fernando has been working at Busan International Foreign School since 2012.
Secondary Science Teacher
Jason has 13 years of experience in education following completion of a Bachelor of Education degree in 2004. He has taught Chemistry, Physics, and general Science courses. He has been teaching Higher-Level IB Chemistry for 10 years, has moderated Chemistry labs for IB, and marked Chemistry IB exams for the last three years. Before teaching he earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering and worked as an engineer for six years; he is registered as a Professional Engineer in Alberta, Canada. Jason enjoys travelling and hiking outdoors, and has a keen interest in the transportation industry. He joined BIFS in August 2016.

Bryn Barnard has fifteen years of experience in education. Has was a Fulbright scholar at Universiti Sains Malaysia and has taught art at the American International School Kuwait; University of the Arts, Philadelphia; University of Delaware; University of Pittsburgh and was a fellow of the Institute of Current World Affairs. Bryn studied illustration at Art Center College of Design and has a Bachelor of Arts with a double major in studio art and Asian studies from the University of California, Berkeley. In his free time, Bryn writes and illustrates science-history books for children and is a visiting author at international schools (twenty-two so far). He also likes to hike, ski, scuba and run. Bryn has been at Busan International Foreign School since 2016.
Thomas De Anna
Thomas De Anna has over 16 years of teaching experience. He is certified in Biology and Middle School Science and has taught in New York State, China, and Thailand prior to coming to South Korea. Thomas has a Bachelor’s degree in Plant Science (Agriculture) from the University of Delaware and a Master’s degree in Science Education from the College of St. Rose. Prior to teaching, Thomas worked as a laboratory technician and for civil engineers designing drainage systems. In his free time, Thomas enjoys spending time with his family, traveling, cooking, and reading. Thomas began working at Busan International Foreign School in 2008.

Simon Furmston has over 14 years of experience in education. Has worked at BIFS since 2013, and before that he was teaching in the UK for 9 years. He specialises in Digital Design and Computing. Simon enjoys the fine arts, photography and swimming.

Nico Gysbers has 8 years of experience in education. He has previously worked at an international school in China as well as private English language academies in Korea. He has a Bachelor of Engineering (Telecommunications) from Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada and a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Toronto. During his free time, he enjoys being with his family and playing basketball. He has been at BIFS since 2015.

Yuni Gysbers has over 5 years of experience in education. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science and is a certified teacher in Korea. She also has a Postgraduate Certificate in Education from the University of Nottingham. She is currently obtaining a post-graduate certificate in Library and Information Service Management from the University of Sheffield. In her free time, Yuni enjoys reading, traveling, baking, exploring new places and food and of course spending time with family and friends. This is her first year at Busan International Foreign School.

Brent Johnson has over 14 years of experience in education. He has worked at the International University of Korea and Dongguk University (Seoul) prior to joining BIFS. Brent has an Associate of Science degree in Biology from Jackson State (Tennessee), a Bachelor’s degree in Dramatic Art from Coastal Carolina University (South Carolina), and three Master’s degrees in: Asian Studies (Sejong University; Seoul), Teaching (University of Southern California; Los Angeles) and Educational Leadership (The Hong Kong Institute of Education). In his free time Brent enjoys spending time with his family, playing a variety of sports, working out and reading. Brent began working at BIFS in the spring of 2012 and is excited about teaching his 6th year in Busan.

Hyunjeong Kim has 8 years of experience in education. She has worked as an after-school English program teacher at public schools for more than 5 years and worked for Busan Global Village prior to joining BIFS. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Physics and minor in English Language and Literature from Bukyung University and has a TESOL certificate from Busan University of Foreign Studies. She enjoys travelling, baking and reading in her free time. She has been at Busan International Foreign School since 2012.

Jinyoung Kwon has more than 15 years of experience in education. Jinyoung has worked at various Korean schools prior to joining BIFS. Jinyoung has a Bachelor’s degree in Secondary education specialized in Geography and a Master’s certificate in teaching Korean as a native language, and is completing her Master’s degree in teaching Korean as a foreign language. Jinyoung likes to dive and travel around the world for her holidays. Jinyoung has been at Busan International Foreign School in the summer of 2003.

Lea Grinter joined BIFS in 2017, after working in Vietnam, China, Turkey, the USA and Australia. She has 28 plus years of teaching experience and, she has a Masters in TESOL and a Bachelor Degree in Physical Education and Legal Studies from Victorian Universities. Lea enjoys motivating students to always be ready to learn from their mistakes and to always achieve as much as is possible. Running, cycling, being active and traveling anywhere and anyhow are the way that she relaxes and a good book is always included.

Miky has a Bachelor’s degree in English, Masters degree in teaching Korean and Masters degree in TESOL. In free time, Miky enjoys reading books, traveling and hanging out with her family and friends. Seunghee Lee has over 10 years of experience in education. Jacqui has more than a decade of experience in secondary and DP Spanish B. She is an IB Examiner for Spanish and an IB Workshop Leader for Language B/Lengua B, CAS, IB Education and ATL in the DP. She has a Bachelor´s Degree in Spanish and a Graduate Certificate in International Education and IB Teaching and Learning from the Universidad Camilo José Cela in Spain. She likes to travel, watch movies, read and dance during her free time. She has been at Busan International Foreign School since 2017.
Martina Plicka has over 12 years experience in education. Martina has worked at the American International School Kuwait and at Notre Dame Collegiate in Alberta, Canada. Martina has a Bachelor’s degree from McGill University in Physical and Health Education with a minor in Biology. In her free time, Martina enjoys participating in and watching most sports, traveling and exploring new areas and cities, and shopping. Kent Saunders has over 10 years experience in education. Kent has worked at ISD International School of Dhaka as head of department and several schools in Australia prior to joining BIFS. In his free time Kent enjoys the beach, exploring out of way places, cooking and riding motorcycles. Kent began working at Busan International Foreign School in the summer of 2015.

Natalie has over 15 years experience teaching English. She comes to BIFS this year from The Sultan’s School in Oman. She has a Master’s degree in Education with a specialization in teaching secondary reading and writing. In her free time, she enjoys reading classical literature, watching films, experimenting with design and people watching. Most of all, she loves to tell a good story.

Merriss Shenstone joined BIFS in 2016, after more than twenty years teaching in Australia and China. She graduated from Sydney University with a degree in Literature and a diploma in Education and has completed training in Leadership for Teaching and Learning. Merriss has been teaching the IB Diploma Programme for seven years and has been an IB examiner and EARCOS workshop leader. She has a keen interest in teaching and learning, and in supporting students to achieve their goals. Merriss also enjoys reading, bushwalking, traveling and spending time with her daughters.
Ya Yun Su
Ya Yun Su has 10 years of experience in education. She has worked at The Overseas School of Colombo, Xiamen International School and The Escuela Internacional de Sampedrana. Ya Yun has Bachelor’s degrees in education and in art history and English from York University in Toronto, Canada. In her free time, she enjoys training her chihuahua to perform circus tricks. Ya Yun began working at BIFS in 2014.

Jacqueline has 5 years of experience in education. She has worked at international schools in Thailand and China. Jacqueline has a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Statistics from Dalhousie University and a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education from the University of Maine at Presque Isle. She is currently working towards a Master of Mathematics for Teachers at the University of Waterloo. In her free time, Jacqueline enjoys traveling, photography, and classical music. Jacqueline has been at Busan International Foreign School since 2017.
Mark has 14 years of experience in education. Has worked at 4 schools. He holds a Bachelor of Music (4 years), specialising in music performance and composition, and an Advanced Dip.Ed both from the University of Melbourne. In his free time Mark is a dedicated father, loves to write and produce music, travel and is a keen rock climber. Has been at Busan International Foreign School since 2012.

Craig Wilson has 12 years of experience in education. He worked at San Pasqual Academy in southern California, Sana’a British School in Yemen, and has spent the last 8 years here at BIFS. Craig has a BA degree in History from University of Whitewater and a MA in Education from National-Louis University.
Gill Vaughan has many years of experience in education and has spent the last 13 years teaching in IB International schools in Zimbabwe and in the UK. Gill has a BSc degree from the University Of Natal in South Africa and a PGCE teaching certificate from the University of Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). In her spare time Gill enjoys hiking, camping and wildlife viewing with her family. Gill began working at BIFS in August 2015.

Eben Viljoen has over 20 years of experience in education. He has worked at 9 schools around the world; including South Africa, England, and international schools in Bangladesh and Korea. Eben has a Higher Diploma in Education from Cape Peninsula University of Technology in Cape Town, South Africa, and gained UK Qualified Teacher Status in 2001. In his free time Eben enjoys spending time with his family, reading, playing and watching sport, and exploring the many amazing sights Korea has to offer. Eben began working at Busan International Foreign School in the summer of 2016.
Secondary Art Teacher
Graham has over 17 years experience in education. He has taught Visual Art and Design in a variety of secondary schools, including time as a boarding housemaster. Graham has a Diploma of Teaching and Bachelor of Design (Hons) from Victoria University in New Zealand.
During his free time he enjoys spending time with family, the outdoors, tennis, running and traveling to interesting places. Graham began working at Busan International Foreign School in 2011.

Colin has enjoyed over 30 years experience in International Education, ranging from Elementary to High School. He has taught at schools in the UK, Norway, Denmark, Germany, Hong Kong, Egypt, and South Korea.
He has a UK Teaching Certificate and Advanced Diploma in Educational Management.
In his free time he loves exploring Korea and travelling world-wide. Also he enjoys walking and cycling, and relaxing with a good concert or theatre performance.
He has been working at BIFS since 2010.

Debora has 5 years of experience in education. She has worked at the American School of Milan and at GEMS American Academy in Abu Dabi as a Special Education and EAL specialist. Debora has a bachelor of Science in Special and Elementary Education from Northern Arizona University. In her free time, she likes running, hiking and traveling around Asia. She has been at Busan International Foreign School since August 2015.

Paul Kang has over 12 years of experience working in IT and education. Paul has worked at Seoul International School, Daeil Foreign Language High School, and the University of Colorado at Boulder. Paul has a Bachelor’s in Russian Studies and minor in Business. In his free time Paul enjoys his family, taking online courses, photography, creating things, and reads. Paul began working at Busan International Foreign School in the summer of 2016.
Sunny Cho has 18 years of experience in Human Resources and general Business Administration. Before BIFS, Sunny worked for OB Beer, International Paper and HR Consulting company. Sunny has a Bachelor’s in Tourism Management and Master’s in Business Administration from USA. Sunny has been working for BIFS since 2012.

JinHee Han has been working over 5 years in BIFS and over 8 years of experience working in various fields. She worked in the finance office for 4 years before taking a secretary position to the secondary school in 2015.
In her free time JinHee enjoys her family, particularly playing soccer with her son.
Seung Mi Hong
Seung Mi has over 8 years of experience working in a multinational company. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Food Science and Nutrition from Pukyong National University and a Master’s degree in Interpretation and Translation in Graduate school of Interpretation and Translation from Busan University of Foreign Studies. In her free time Seung Mi enjoys swimming and taking a walk. She began working at Busan International Foreign School in the spring of 2009.
Heejung Hwang has over 13 years of experience working in nursing area. Heejung has worked at Gyeongsang National University Hospital, surgical intensive care unit for 7years and Dongnam Inst. Of Radiological & Medical Sciences, cancer center for 2 years prior to joining BIFS. Heejung has a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from Gyeongsang National University and completed Oncology nurse practitioner course in graduate school. In her free time, Heejung enjoys travelling with her family and watching sports. Heejung began working at Busan International Foreign School in the summer of 2012.
