At Busan International Foreign School we believe that every student should enjoy equality of access to a positive educational experience. We recognize that a student’s academic progress need not be affected detrimentally because of their command of English language; that with innovative teaching and targeted support input can be made comprehensible to all. English as an Additional Language (EAL) teachers and subject teachers work closely together to ensure that key concepts, knowledge and skills are understood, acquired and able to be applied by our EAL students.
Because English is the language of instruction our school provides EAL to students’ whose English language skills are less than proficient. We determine proficiency levels using the McGraw Hill Language Assessment System (LAS) a comprehensive suite of assessment tests utilized in many international schools throughout the world. From the LAS results we determine whether a student’s social and academic experience at BIFS will benefit from additional English Language support. If this is the case, our EAL teachers provide extra English language instruction and/or curriculum support either in an inclusive or pull-out model. EAL teachers and subject teachers work closely together to ensure that key concepts, knowledge and skills are understood, acquired and able to be applied by our EAL students. Language development progress is monitored by way of the LAS Benchmark tests. Feedback is provided through the BIFS reporting system, although parents are of course welcome to contact the school anytime to discuss their child’s progress.
