Homework Guidelines and Procedures

Busan International Foreign School (BIFS) is committed to providing students with a balanced education. We are concerned with the academic growth of students as well as their social and physical development.

Homework:
Homework is typically defined as any tasks “assigned to students by school teachers that are meant to be carried out during non-school hours” (Cooper, 1989a, p. 7).

The purpose of homework is to:
practice skills and reinforce content,
preview material for class discussion (in the flipped classroom), and
study for quizzes and formative and summative assessments.

Benefits of homework:
Purposeful homework can help students develop the ATL (Approaches to Learning) skills essential for a 21st century learner.
Self Management skills: organization, planning, time management, prioritizing and persistence and perseverance,
Thinking: independent problem solving, critical thinking, creative thinking and retrieving, applying and transferring knowledge, skills and understandings.
Missing or Incomplete Work:
Missing or incomplete homework is considered a behavior issue and not an academic issue and will be addressed accordingly.
Students may be asked to complete missing work during breaks or after school under teacher supervision.
If a pattern of missing or incomplete work exists, teachers will send a Progress Report home and students will work with the teacher, principal and/or counselor to resolve the issue.

Amount of time spent on homework:
BIFS takes a scaffolded approach to the amount of homework which can be assigned, which takes into consideration a child’s age, language and learning levels and programme requirements.

Hallmarks of effective homework:
It has a clear academic purpose that both teachers and students understand and buy-into.
It is an efficient means of demonstrating understanding – in short, no busywork.
It provides students with some control over their own learning and a sense of ownership.
It give students a sense of competence. Homework should be differentiated in both content and quantity so that students can complete homework on their own in a reasonable length of time.
It is visually comprehensible. Looks matter. Students are more motivated to do homework that is “visually uncluttered”

Teachers’, Students’ and Parents’ responsibilities:

Teachers
Record all homework and summative tasks on Managebac in a timely manner, preferably during the day or immediately following the completion of the school day. Weekend assignments should be entered on Friday.
Ensure that no more than 2 assessments are assigned on a given day.

Students
Check Managebac on a daily basis.
Discuss any problems completing homework with teacher as soon as possible.

Parents – As students move through the MYP to DP, students will become independent, but parent monitoring is still essential.
Assist student with checking Managebac.
Monitor student’s work on Managebac.
Communicate any concerns with a teacher in a timely manner.
