Laptop Maintenance

Backing Up Your Data

It is important for students to get into a habit of backing up their data on either their school Google Apps for Education account or an external USB drive.

Hard cases, Key skins, and Personalization

IT recommends students purchase hard cases or some form of protective covering for the laptop to prevent physical damage. Key skin is recommended to protect from light liquid spills. Please personalization (stickers or writing their name) your child’s’ devices.

Apple MacBooks

BIFS IT Services can refer you to third party Apple repair centers, or you may have to send your laptop to Seoul for repair.

Windows-based laptops (PCs)

Busan has local repair centers for the following brands: HP, Samsung, and LG. If you purchase another brand of laptop PC, please check the service arrangements in Korea. We may be able to undertake diagnostic testing and basic maintenance on individual parts by opening the computer with your permission.

Laptop Software

Microsoft Office

Students will need Microsoft Office 2011 (Mac) or 2013 (PC) or Office 365 as part of their studies. Our licensing agreements IT Services can install Microsoft Office 2011 (Mac) and Microsoft Office 2013 (Windows) on student laptops at no charge. We reserve the right to remove Microsoft Office if our licensing arrangements with Microsoft change during the student’s time at the school, or before their departure from the school.

Antivirus

Students are encouraged to install an anti-virus for their laptops.

Google Apps for Education Account

Your child is given a school Google Apps for Education Account. This account will be deleted after a few months when the student graduates or leaves BIFS.

Other Software

Additional software may also be required later depending on the student’s subject choices.

Laptop Care and Responsibility

Please remind students that the ownership of the laptop is the parents and students are borrowing laptops from their parents to use for school.

The students are responsible for the care of their device- this includes the charger and battery. Lost or stolen laptops are the sole responsibility of the student.

All students are assigned a locker where laptops can be secured. Charging stations are provided around the school.

IT Services team members are available to assist students and parents with technical support. If you have any questions, you can email it@bifskorea.org in either English or Korean.

Yours faithfully,

Kevin Baker
